My Boutique Sale Review.

So the top 5 things I learned from having my own "shop" for 2 weekends.
1. People are cheap.
2. People don't know how to shop.
3. People care about $4.
4. People don't know what looks good.
5. People aren't creative.
OKAY these might sound harsh, maybe very harsh,
BUT let me explain before you start thinking I am some meanie.
1. People are cheap- people want used clothes for 99 cents, they think if it's "used" that means that they deserve it for almost nothing. Have you been to Goodwill...yeah um nothing there is cheap and that stuff is crap...okay SOMETIMES you can find something that's rarely been used.
2. People don't know how to shop- people don't dig, don't search, don't try. I would watch so many people just gaze at the clothes. I guess I am the only person that goes rack to rack searching and digging and trying on everything. To me it's like a treasure hunt, you never know what your going to find.
3. People care about $4- I had three boxes of $5 bins, people actually thought twice about getting stuff in the $5 box... contemplating on whether they should get it...IT'S FIVE DOLLARS...it's LUNCH, it's a smoothie, it's NOTHING. I guess $5 is a lot to the public.
4. People don't know what looks good- people think things look bad on them, or they can't pull it off. OKAY people REALLY you can't pull it off because you haven't tried. People need to think outside the box and go for it.
5. People aren't creative- this goes with #4, people aren't creative enough to think about what could go with an item. I would say this is cute, they would say BUT where will I wear that with...I'm like um everything...and then list about a thousand different looks AND then after all those ideas they would say um don't think so. WOW.
I love people, I really do BUT it comes to a point where people say they want to be more "hip" or "stylish" BUT they are not willing to work for it. I guess for the first time I realized being a good shopper is a skill and only few are born with the gift...haha. I thought for a long time that I was cursed with some kind of shopping syndrome BUT I know now I should be grateful for it.
Doing a sale is a lot of work, thank goodness I had extra time on my hands to pull it off.
So glad so many were able to make it.
Now that it's all cleaned up and clothes are boxed away
I am wondering if I will ever do another one of these again after the hours and hours spent pricing.

  2. You DO have a talent. It's your gift as well as your hobby. You're artistic, savvy and energetic. You know how to express yourself in a positive light and you do it with finesse and class. You recognize beauty and style.

I used to care. I done. I don't want to spend my time or money on clothes anymore because it's exhausting. Just as you get your wardrobe together, fashion changes or you gain or lose weight. You pick out something that you only wear a few times and condemn yourself for spending money that just hangs in the closet until you give up in frustration and donate it or give it away.
Some people like to run or workout. Some people like to garden. Some people spend most of their efforts, money and interest on reading or sewing or painting or participating in or watching sports. Some people are absorbed in music. Sometimes people are good at these things or sometimes they just enjoy it even though they're not experts. (not too many people can have more than a few hobbies and be good at them all, either).
I would rather spend my time and money on travel. Some people may think that's a waste of time and/or money. But I'm darn good at it and love it. It's my hobby. I'm cheap, but I still have a great time. I also like to think about how much money I'll have to have in the bank when I retire (which is soon). I've narrowed down my interests that take a lot of money but still try a few new things from time to time.
There are TONS of other things (kids, grandkids, church, community, etc) to occupy my time, money and mind. Don't you think that we all have to have an outlet, at least one hobby?

I'll never do a garage sale for household items for exactly all of the reasons you listed for why you think you'll never do a fashion sale again. I know people who have garage sales as a hobby! Ugh!

Such is life, eh? Or another cliche' "to each his own"?

  3. hahah Cindy love you! So true. Have you watched Modern Family episode this week, Jay had a garage sale and I totally felt like him! you should watch it if you haven't...so funny. I like to spend my money on my home, clothes, and travel. people think it's stupid BUT who cares it's what I like and what I have fun spending my hard earned money on. We all have our things we splurge on.

  4. Amen to THAT sista! Yep, Jeff and I saw that episode and laughed our heads off! That is exactly why I won't do another garage Sale! Selling stuff on eBay or Craigslist has been a little more fruitful. When my sister passed away, I tried to sell her Coach bags, evening dresses and everyday wear. She NEVER shopped at discount stores. Her idea of slumming would be going to the factory outlet mall. Some of the stuff had the price tag still on and people still only wanted to give me a few bucks (I had a pair of new jeans size 6 from Banana Republic I think that had a price tag on them for $198. I finally sold them to Buffalo for $12 I think).

  5. You have the CUTEST style. I wish I lived closer! I would have come to your sale & BOUGHT stuff! But yeah sales of any kind are hard work (that Modern Fam episode was hilarious) and I'm sick of cheap people too...be grateful you don't live in Idaho...everyone here is cheap! So annoying. I'd love to see outfit posts from you for ideas in the future! miss you!

  6. I absolutely adore the clothes you helped me pick! And I got what I came for too, color!!! At the same time, I got cute and comfy and a ton of new things to wear with my skinny jeans! I knew you'd be the one to help me feel more comfortable in my new fashion adventures. I left wishing I had a larger budget, because I wanted to get so much more. Maybe another time!

Thanks so much for holding the sale. I had a great time!

  8. I think that many times the things we take for granted that we understand or do well, are really our talents and gifts. My sister can rearrange a house to its best potential. She helped me one time and turned to me and asked, really, you can't see it. No, I couldn't and I was so grateful for her gift. Apparently I make people feel really comfortable. Not really a traditionally marketable product, but maybe in the customer service/HR industry? You have an amazing gift and some of us need a nice push to get us to be more fashionable. You do it easily and understandably get frustrated when others don't see it in this setting. Or they get to afraid. It takes those who are not so gifted to be bold like you in fashion. I love just looking at your blog, it is visually appealling. A wonderful talent you will be able to share with others (and your daughters (someday) will be so grateful for a mom that loves fashion and gets it).

Cheapness is a whole other issue. That probably soured the whole experience.

By the way, when you go back to Phoenix someday, you will have to stop by My Sister's Closet. A fantastic resale store in Scottsdale. Dolce and Chanel, some great stuff and really well priced. They have clearance sales twice a year as they bring in the new season fashions. We hit it right this last August, so it was even more awesome. Mike got a Oscar de La Renta Suit for $15. Not usually that low, but they were trying to get rid of iventory. The one on Scottsdale road is the best.
